ARTHRITIS TOOL PROJECT
BRIEF
Ergonomic cooking tool for people with arthritis which provides better safety and usability but also has its aesthetics carefully considered
FINDINGS
Brian, a self-employed fisherman, manages his household alone and enjoys discussing work and politics at the local pub or reading in his garden. Diagnosed with osteoarthritis six months ago, he now struggles with daily tasks and feels the condition limits his quality of life.
COLOUR The product aims to blend into everyday life for a 40-year-old audience. Postmodern colors feel childish, while modernism's muted greys and browns offer functionality, simplicity, and trust. Brian, the client, wants to fit in and enjoy life without standing out. Proposed color options are listed above.
POSSIBLE MATERIALS
MF - hard, tough, heat resistant, food safe, chemical resistant.
HDPE - Weather proof, tough, chemical resistant.
ABS - Tough, hard.
Thermochromic Pigment - Changes colour in response to temperature change.
AESTETICS
Arthritis patients, aged 40-50, grew up during modernist and postmodernist eras. Designing with postmodernism’s bright colors and playful shapes could evoke joy and connect emotionally with them.

FINAL RENDERS
The final design is an arthritis pickup tool, aiming to make picking up pan lids easier and more accessible. Slide your arm underneath the arch and rest your fingers through the holes for support, taking away the finger dexterity required to clasp a lid. Navigate the bottom wedges either side of the lid and lift.
